This week by chance I read two novels that had been inspired by real life and real people. The Lost Letters of Rose Carey is a fantastic Australian Historical Fiction novel inspired by the life of 1920s Australian film icon Annette Kellerman. I can’t tell you how much fun I had going down the google rabbit holes about Annette/ the 1920s Australian film industry/ silent films/ Hollywoods golden age/ women fitness icons….at first I was looking up things and people that had caught my eye, but I was too invested in the Lost Letters story so I had to postit myself a list and that was so much fun! Who knew!?! But no spoilers here at all, just get excited!!
My TBR at the moment does feel like a mountain, I could have picked anything up but I could not go past The Ministry of Time, my ARC for it is so rainbow-y and I kind of thought it might be Time Travellers Wife-y..I think all I knew was that the government had a ministry department for time travel? I had no idea that the person they rescued would be an Arctic Explorer, and goodness beyond Scott and Armundsen (that I got interested in after Penelope Janu’s In at the Deep End) who knew I needed to know anyone else…Now I have a favourite Arctic Explorer!!! First Lieutenant Graham Gore is a real person who Kaliane Bradley ‘put him in..whether he likes it or not..’ I at first could not believe it, then I loved the fact this was a real person, but now I’m conflicted, I don’t know is it appropriate? It’s his personality, history and sensibilities..
All I know is I have googled things I never thought I would have, my search history would be so funny to look at! I’ve learnt things I didn’t even know I needed to know..I am trivia ready I’m sure! What a week!! What diverse subject matter, what such different books to have read back to back and what different ways of using real life…I tell you the reader life is such an interesting one!
