Historical fiction is my jam! Kirsten Hannah is an absolute master at it and so when I got to read an ARC of The Women you had better believe I was beside myself! I had no idea what I was in for and wouldn’t have had it any other way! I remember worrying my expectations were too high and honestly I had nothing to worry about! What a masterpiece.
The Women follows Frankie, from sheltered, comfortable good daughter to a kickarse nurse serving in Vietnam. And we watch then as she come home to protests and a changed people. Like the best historical fiction this one individual tells the story of the people. I got to learn so much and really feel I’ve walked as far as I would like to in the nurse’s shoes serving in the Vietnam War.
I could not have loved it more. This is exactly what I want from historical fiction, I now feel I have friends that served in Vietnam. It is harrowing; any second you are expecting disaster and we watch Frankie lose so much. But it was also such enjoyable reading, there is real friendship here, fun and so much music!!! I loved the women, and highly highly recommend it!!!!!
