I have read so much WW2 historical fiction, I thought I knew the war from every perspective; but I’ve never thought what it would have been like for a German SS soldier in France. I think this book is really well done; the alienation, the suspicion, the humanity and discrimination, ‘the fear..’ I absolutely believed all of the people, I’m not surprised at all it was inspired by the author’s great uncle. I took so long to read this novel, life kept getting in the way, but the story and the characters really stayed with me. I definitely think it would be a great bookclub novel; lots to process and discuss
