I can’t believe this was a debut. I was troubled at first because the villain is a Muslim, it did feel unfair. But it reads beautifully. It’s a novel concerned with friendship, mentorship and belonging. I loved the intricacies of Dr Kate’s backstory. I thought her realisation that busyness ‘so she didn’t have to think’ was perfect. We know exactly who she is. The statement this book makes on our health system and overwhelmed doctors is powerful. There is no need for ‘fatigue to be a fact of life’.
