There is a lot going on in this novel. And I was completely here for it all. I loved being beside Maddie as she navigates the whole more milk situation, the fact that she has 'spent the entirety of my professional like in predominantly white spaces’, I loved that exploration.
I loved seeing her come to the realisation that she deserves 'a seat at the table'
I also was absolutely there for her when she swears at her mum and James 'I am so tired of everyone in this family acting the way they do because Maame is always there to pick up the pieces, to sort out your mess, to look after you..' man I was completely swearing at them for her!
It's OK to accept help and to tell people you need it, Maddie's grown up being told to pretend, 'that they won't understand' and I think her realisation that she deserves more and can accept help is so inspiring. I loved this theme in the novel.
I don't know if I've made this clear, but I was absolutely there for this coming of age. I loved Maddie and was completely beside her as she grows, grieves, and learns more about what she wants from life. It's just great reading!
